Mark Gould: Café 30

Trumpeter Mark Gould has made his mark in the classical world, as principle trumpeter with the Metropolitan Opera, among other prized positions within the longhair sphere. On his new CD, Cafe` 30 (Angel 7243; 52:15), Gould explores music far off to the side of standard western classical repertoire and joins the ranks of classical artists following their hearts to places beyond the concert hall-or opera house. The title track, a duet with classical guitarist Ricardo Cobo, is by Astor Piazzolla, whose music has offered a portal into “world” music for many classical musicians. Gould also performs music of Brazilian composers Pixinguina and Jaoa Gilberto, and pieces by percussionist/collaborator Raimundo Penaforte. He also points out the inherent link of classical composers to ethnic roots, with themes by Dvorak, Schubert and Manuel de Falla (an ethereal version of “Nana”). Crossover may be a dirty word in some quarters, in some contexts, but this recording is a fine example of crossing over in a musical, globe-embracing way.
