Mario Pavone/Nu Trio: Remembering Thomas

Nu Trio features bassist Pavone, drummer Matt Wilson and pianist Peter Madsen performing 11 of the most compositionally inspiring songs to come along in some time. Pavone, who was the founder of the Creative Musicians Improvising Forum, has also worked with a veritable “Who’s Who” in jazz, including Dewey Redman, Anthony Braxton and Jane Ira Bloom. Remembering Thomas is Pavone’s homage to the late saxophonist Thomas Chapin and features diverse songs like “Don’t Mind If I do” and “Aeolus.” Madsen leaves a distinctive imprint on “The Red Blues” and “Pearl Talk” proves excellent for the group’s collective creativity. But it’s “Jam-Ming” that spotlights Pavone’s compositional abilities, and it is here where one experiences his complete expression.
