Vocalist Madeleine Peyroux will perform two songs by legendary lyricist Jack Lawrence at the annual ASCAP Foundation Awards on Dec. 2. The performance, which will take place at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center in New York, will honor the 92-year-old songwriter who is being presented the ASCAP Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Peyroux will perform his classic works “Tenderly” and “Beyond the Sea.”
The 22-year-old Peyroux began her career eight years ago when she released her debut album Dreamland on Rounder, which Time magazine declared “The most exciting, involving vocal performance by a new singer this year.” Her sophomore effort came out this year and has received the same acclaim as her debut album in 1996. This album, entitled Careless Love, has earned praise such as “The obvious Billie Holiday resemblance aside, what you hear is that Peyroux really knows how to wrap her aching, intimate voice around a lyric,” from Newsweek critic Jac Chebatoris.
