Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson: Doin’ the Sugar Too

Bullseye Blues has re-released a blast from the past, Luther Guitar Junior Johnson’s Doin’ The Sugar Too (Bullseye Blues 9563; 52:04). Recorded in 1983 with The Magic Rockers, this hard-hitting collection includes three previously unreleased performances as well as convincing covers of classic blues tunes by Z.Z. Hill, Fenton Robinson, Willie Dixon and B.B. King. Johnson, a onetime member of the Muddy Waters Blues Band, makes his strongest statements here on driving shuffles and boogies like “Flippin’ And Floppin'” and “What You Don’t Know Won’t Hurt You,” both given an added kick by the Roomful Of Blues Horns.
