The Louis Armstrong Center for Music & Medicine, a branch of NYC’s Beth Israel Medical Center, will hold an awards ceremony and silent auction next month to benefit its music therapy programs. Entitled “A More Wonderful World” and scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 6-8 p.m., the event will honor Phoebe Jacobs, executive vice president of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, and jazz trumpet legend Joe Wilder (pictured). The evening will feature performances from the 85-year-old Wilder along with trumpeter Jon Faddis and pianist David Hazeltine, as well as the Broadway cast of The Fantasticks. In addition to the performances and cocktails, there will also be a silent auction featuring musical, sports, entertainment and travel offerings, with proceeds to benefit the Louis Armstrong Center.
The Center was established in 2005 and provides clinical services to musicians and children with asthma and developmental disorders. The Armstrong Center also uses music therapy to treat adults with heart and pulmonary diseases.
“A More Wonderful World” will be held at the Nerken Family Atrium, located at the Phillips Ambulatory Care Center, 10 Union Square East, between 14th and 15th Streets in Manhattan. Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
