Louis Armstrong International Airport

Ambassadors flying into New Orleans from around the world will pick up their bags at the Louis Armstrong International Airport, newly renamed in honor of the jazz ambassador’s 100th birthday. Armstrong, a New Orleans native, helped turn New Orleans into the jazz Mecca it is today.

“Whenever anybody thinks of Louis Armstrong, they think of that great smile,” commented Beverly Gianna of the Greater New Orleans Tourist and Convention Bureau. “It puts a smile on your face just imagining that, and that’s what will happen when people arrive and when they leave.”

Mayor Marc Morial said, “The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport will celebrate the achievements of one of the greatest cultural ambassadors of the 20th century.”

The airport plans to unveil its new logo and signs August 2, two days before Armstrong’s 100th birthday. Pops would be proud.
