Lou Grassi Celebrates 60th Birthday With Concert

Lou Grassi, the New York City-based drummer-percussionist, turns 60 this month and plans to celebrate with a special birthday concert.

The festivities will be held on January 14th at St. Mark’s Church, located on 2nd Avenue and 10th Street in Manhattan. The show begins at 1 p.m. with swinging mainstream jazz by the Lou Grassi Jazz Quintet, followed by refreshments at 2 p.m., and will conclude with free jazz by the Lou Grassi PoBand at 3 p.m. A donation of $10 is suggested. For more information or for reservations, call (212) 866-2289, or e-mail [email protected].

Grassi is known for spanning the jazz spectrum with everything from ragtime to free improvisation. He has worked as a composer for both musical theater and modern dance groups, and for more than a decade served as the house drummer for New York City’s famed St. Peter’s Church. Grassi’s most recent album, Infinite POtential, was released on CIMP in 2006.
