Little Arthur Duncan: Singin’ With the Sun

On the mellow side is Singin’ With the Sun (Delmark DE-733; 65:01) by 65-year-old Chicago based Little Arthur Duncan. A decided Jimmy Reed influence comes across in Duncan’s smooth, understated vocal delivery and unadorned harmonica style, which is particularly evident on Reed tunes like “Pretty Thing” and “Tribute to Jimmy Reed.” Backed by the Rockin’ Johnny Band, Duncan leaves his mark on Howlin’ Wolf’s “No Place to Go” and Pee Wee Crayton’s “Blues After Hours,” while also stating his case eloquently on originals like “Sugar Bee,” the autobiographical “Leaving Mississippi” and the mournful, Delta-flavored title track.
