The 17th annual Rosslyn Jazz Festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 1-7 p.m. in Gateway Park, Arlington, Va. The event is free and open to the public, and jazz station WPFW 89.3 FM will broadcast portions of the event live.
Headlining the festival will be jazz violin virtuoso Regina Carter (pictured). Other performers include vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and the Brazilian jazz group Origem, featuring special guest trumpeter Geoff Gallante, a 6-year-old Arlington resident who has performed on NBC’s Today and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Kevin Mahogany will also sing at the festival, performing his “Big Joe Turner Tribute” with saxophonist Red Holloway and vocalist Kathy Kosins. Since its founding in 1990, the festival has hosted such noted jazz musicians as James Moody, Nnenna Freelon and Ahmad Jamal, as well as Mid-Atlantic artists including Grammy-nominated vocalist Juanita Williams and the late guitarist Charlie Byrd.
Gateway Park is located at N. Lynn Street and Lee Highway, two blocks from the Rosslyn Metro stop. For more information, visit the festival’s Web site.
