Turning 60 is no small occasion, especially when you’ve been living the jazz life for 40 of those years. Soprano-sax star Dave Liebman celebrates his 60th birthday this week at New York’s Birdland with a musical program stretching over four nights.
Wednesday, Sept. 13-“Different but the Same”
Lieb will play tenor exclusively as he partners with former student Ellery Eskelin and is backed by Jim Black on drums and Tony Marino on bass. The group will mix free and traditional jazz.
Thursday, Sept. 14-“The Dave Liebman Group”
Having played and recorded together for 15 years, guitarist Jim Juris, drummer Marko Marckino and bassist Tony Marino will back Lieb as they explore their diverse repertoire of jazz and funk.
Friday, Sept. 15-“The Dave Liebman Big Band”
Liebman’s most recent big band recording, Beyond the Line, earned a Grammy nomination and Liebman will build on that success with his ensemble of New York musicians, conducted by Gunnar Mossblad.
Saturday, Sept. 16-“Dave Liebman and Guests”
Joined by saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and trumpeter Randy Brecker, the evening will allow Liebman to present the music of his two greatest influences; Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Saturday’s rhythm section includes drummer Adam Nussbaum, bassist Cecil McBee and pianist Phil Markowitz.
There will be two sets each night starting at 9 and 11. Birdland is located at 314 W. 44th St in Manhattan, NY, and tickets are $30. A four-day birthday party at Birdland, who could turn that down?
