The Lew Anderson Big Band digs a deep groove from the opening track to the 13th on this powerful album, broadcast live and recorded at the Red Blazer nightclub in New York. Alto saxophonist Anderson leads the well-meshed 16-piece aggregation as it roars through “After You’ve Gone,” explores a medley of “Apple Honey/Hallelujah Time,” and delivers a dynamite dual rendition of “How High the Moon/Shine.”
Among the many memorable solos are Vinnie Riccitelli’s alto on “Lover Man,” Scott Whitfield’s Trombone on “When You Wish Upon a Star,” Rob Middleton’s tenor on “Lover Come Back to Me,” and Glenn Drewes’ trumpet on “Brazil” and his flugelhorn on “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” This band delivers both strong section work and great soloists throughout.
