Latin Jazz’s Ladies Come to D.C.

Three female stars of Latin jazz, percussionist Sheila E., singer/pianist Eliane Elias (pictured) and saxophonist Jane Bunnett, will bring their sounds to the Nation’s Capital on three separate dates in May and June. The concerts—which, thankfully, will be held indoors if the heat we’re getting in D.C. these days foreshadows the summer to come—make up the fourth season of the Smithsonian Associates’ Latin jazz series “Música de las Américas.”

Those who arrive early for the shows can watch pre-concert interviews with the featured artist in the company of a jazz scholar to be announced. All concerts, except the Sheila E. performance, will be held at the Voice of America Auditorium, 330 Independence Avenue S.W. at 7:30 p.m. with the pre-concert interviews at 6:30 p.m. Bunnett plays on May 18; Elias on June 22. Sheila E. will do her thing on June 8 at George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st St. N.W.
