JazzTimes contributor Jesse “Chuy” Varela’s Desde La Bahia 2007 Calendar, now in its 4th edition, features black and white photographs of Latin-jazz musicians at work and play. Among the highlights of the calendar are mambo great Tito Puente performing at the Palladium Ballroom in New York City, legendary songstress Carmen Miranda and Puerto Rican vocalist Tito Rodriguez. The calendar serves as a memorial to those jazz and Latin musicians who passed away in 2006.
In addition to contributing to JazzTimes, Jesse “Chuy” Varela is the music director of KCSM-FM 91, a San Francisco jazz station, and is also a freelance writer for the East Bay Express, the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Jose Metro and El Tecolote, as well as a contributor to Latin Beat Magazine. He has written liner notes and co-produced compilations and reissue packages for Verve, Fantasy, Concord, Rhino, Arhoolie and others.
