Here the Cincinnati-based guitarist salutes his long standing acquaintance and influence-the late, great George Van Eps, who passed away last year at 85-with a series of seven-string solos and ensemble numbers.
On selected tracks (“Just You, Just Me,” “Gone With the Wind,” “Change Partners”), Poole is joined by drummer John Von Ohlen and/or vibraphonist Dick Sisto, who more than capably serve as foils and propellants for Poole’s laid-back approach. The rest of the time, he goes it alone-in harmonically slippery Van Epsian fashion (“Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Gee Baby Ain’t I Good to You,” “You Go to My Head”), occasionally slipping into a bouncy Chet Atkins feel (“You Make Me Feel So Young”).
All in all, it’s a classy tribute to one of jazz guitar’s most unique greats.
