Karl Latham: Resonance

As drummer Karl Latham and his quartet casually jam on tunes by icons like Jimi Hendrix, Björk and U2, they get a bit funky, crunchy or ruminative but don’t generally dive deeply into anything. When they do really get inside a tune, as on Hendrix’s “Manic Depression” and “Spanish Castle Magic,” the results are vibrant and engaging. Thelonious Monk and the band’s original tunes also fare well, but the Stevie Wonder tracks bookending the disc simply establish a beat and skim the surface.
