Kali: Francofaune

Martinique-based musician Kali is a noted figure in the Carribbean genre of zouk, active for the past twenty years and an alumnus of WOMAD festivals. His latest album, Francofaune (Tinder 42856692; 46:19), bristles with the unique and bumptious Afro-Caribbean merging of styles, with elements of reggae and jazz detectable in the mix. A nine-piece group is led by the sweet-voiced Kali, who also plays sinuous, loopy lines on banjo. The musical upshot is a lilting, celebratory energy source-a carnival-like atmosphere with musicality attached, and with social consciousness tucked into the lyrical folds of the songs.
