Juilliard Orchestra Plays Kenton

The once bold, once modern music of big-band leader Stan Kenton (pictured) will be featured in a concert by the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra on Thur., Feb. 27. Reedist Victor Goines, who is both Juilliard’s Director of Jazz Studies and a longtime member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, will conduct the orchestra through a number of Kenton’s signature tunes, including “Artistry in Rhythm,” “Opus in Pastels,” “Youngblood,” “Concerto to End All Concertos,” “What’s New?,” “Interlude” and “Kingfish.” Following that, Goines will lead the band through Kenton’s six-part Cuban Fire Suite, originally heard on the 1956 album Cuban Fire! (Capitol).
