Juilliard Interviews the Greats

If there was ever any doubt, Juilliard certainly seems to be taking their new venture into jazz education quite seriously. A new series of interviews with players of the bebop vanguard will take place into next year at Juilliard’s Morse Recital Hall.

Dubbed Conversations in Jazz, the series is a joint presentation between the school and Jazz at Lincoln Center and begins Nov. 18 when pianist Renee Rosnes talks with pianist Dr. Billy Taylor. Victor Goines, artistic director of Jazz at Juilliard, interviews saxophonist Jimmy Heath a couple of weeks later on Dec. 2. And on Feb. 3, 2003, Juilliard Jazz percussion faculty member Carl Allen will sit down and talk drums with Max Roach (pictured).

The best part of these events is getting to listen to the greats go on and on, but the other best part is that they’re free and no tickets are required, just walk in and listen. The Morse Recital Hall is located at 155 W. 65th Street in Manhattan. All interviews begin at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call the Juilliard Box Office Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at (212) 769-7406, or visit www.juilliard.edu.
