Joyce: Ilha Brasil

There’s plenty of variety and coloring on this Brazilian jazz outing by vocalist/songwriter Joyce. “Rodando a Baiana” has a surging batucada segment. “Paraiso” and “Oasis” are delicate ballads with violins, cello, and viola. “Feijao com Arroz” lives up to its title, a spicy musical stew. On “Viola de Prata” Joyce’s high-pitched vocals joust with pianist Sizao Machado. Other instrumentalists include reedman Teco Cardoso, trumpeter Chico Oliveira and trombonist Vittor Santos. – Marcela Breton
