Jon Mayer Trio: Do It Like This

Veteran Los Angeles-based pianist Jon Mayer has issued his second collection, an eclectic combination of jazz standards, a few more-obscure charts and four originals. It’s a well-balanced mix for Mayer and his solid sidemen, bassist Bob Maize and drummer Harold Mason, enhanced by the definitive tenor sax of Ernie Watts. Mayer’s solo track, “If I Should Lose You,” is gorgeous, as is the trio and quartet working of two tribute tunes, “Ballad for Trane” (for John Coltrane) and “Randy’s Tune” (for Randy Weston). Watts swings through a waltz, “Lonely Hearts,” as well as a gorgeous original ballad, “Shari’s Bolero,” and the terrific title track, on which he plays alto.
