Johnny Sansone: Crescent City Moon

New Orleans’ own Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone pays tribute to his hometown on Crescent City Moon (Bullseye Blues 9585A). Second line rhythms percolate underneath “Gimme A Dollar,” sparked by Sonny Landreth’s signature slide guitar work. Accordion and rubboard add a distinct zydeco flavor to “Your Kind Of Love” while the accordion on “Anything Anytime” takes on a conjunto vibe. Only locals and hardcore New Orleanophiles will understand the title of the album’s lone instrumental “Popeyes And A Hubigs.” The ebullient “Uncle Joe” is a paean to the bayou country of South Louisiana while the title track is a haunting minor key lament. Harmonica ace Sansone has assembled a spirited collection of dance music that will no doubt go over big on Saturday nights in New Orleans, or anywhere for that matter.
