John McLaughlin’s New CD

Hot off the Verve presses: John McLaughlin has a brand new recording in the can, Thieves and Poets, and it will be released on October 14. The CD will feature a new orchestral suite penned by the guitarist as well as a handful of standards. Here’s the complete track list:

1. Thieves and Poets (John McLaughlin)

Part 1 – 12:36

Part 2 – 8:18

Part 3 – 5:38

2. My Foolish Heart (Ned Washington-Victor Young) 5:03

3. The Dolphin (Luiz Eca) 4:16

4. Stella By Starlight (Ned Washington-Victor Young) 4:26

5. My Romance (Lorenz Hart -Richard Rodgers) 4:09

Johnny Mac is featured on acoustic guitar exclusively on the CD, and on the title suite he’s joined by the I Pommeriggi Musicali di Milano conducted by Renato Rivolta

with featured soloists Paul Meyer (clarinet), Viktoria Mullova (violin), Matt Haimovitz (cello), Philippe Loli (guitar) and Bruno Frumento (timpani). For the other four cuts, the Aighetta Quartet joins McLaughlin. All of the quartet-Olivier Fautrat, Francois Szönyi, Alexandre Del Fa, and Philippe Loli-play acoustic guitar as well, and guest Helmut “Hell” Schartlmueller provides the acoustic bass guitar. That’s a lot of acousticness.

Check out the cool CD cover shown here, which features the Mahavishnu master chillin’ with his pup in a swank den that’s tricked out with home-recording gear. The room looks so cozy that even I could be musically creative in there (if I had talent or skills, that is).

McLaughlin has a Web site, natch, which you can check out by clicking here. The Flash version takes a while to load and is a bit hard to navigate (kind of like that screaming Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin album Love Devotion Surrender from 1972, which Columbia/Legacy is reissuing on September 23, remastered and with bonus tracks). I’d recommend using the “56k Light Vers.” at even if you have a high-speed connection.
