Fans of the late John Coltrane will be pleased to see a familiar face at the revolutionary saxophonist’s memorial concert this September.
Tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders (pictured), a regular collaborator of Coltrane’s from 1964 until the time of his death, will be the special guest at 26th Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert. The concert, now having spanned four decades, will be the featured event for the 3rd Annual Equinox Music Festival in Boston this September 17 to September 28.
Sanders’ performance will take place at the Blackman Auditorium in Boston on September 20. The performance begins at 8 p.m., and tickets priced at $25. Performing with Sanders will be percussionist Syd Smart and saxophonist Leonard Brown, who founded the Memorial Concert back in 1977. The musicians hoped to honor Coltrane by performing “exciting, beautiful, and moving renditions of his musical compositions.”
While a highlight, the Coltrane concert is not the only thing going down at the Equinox festival. The festival also marks the return of pianist Cecil Taylor, performing in Boston for the first time in 10 years.
