Joe Morris: Underthru

The most surprising of the new Morris offerings is Underthru, if for no other reason than it is the most overtly jazz-based recording in the Morris catalog. That doesn’t mean he’s playing “I Got Rhythm” changes or copping licks from Charlie Christian, but Underthru swings and grooves and leaves a lot of space for interaction. The 16-minute title track, for instance, is a medium tempo vamp in 6/4 time. The resilient rhythm section, with bassist Chris Lightcap and drummer Gerald Cleaver, hooks up and locks in, allowing Morris and violinist Mat Maneri to glide, swoop and occasionally dive-bomb the finger-popping listener. It may not be a commercial breakthrough, but Underthru should certainly win Morris some new fans.
