Tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano recently announced the debut of his new Web site, joelovano.com. In addition to a multimedia biography, a complete discography, gigs listing, information about Lovano’s compositions, educational activities, DVDs and books, the site also includes a media gallery with changing monthly content.
“Joe has amassed a fascinating collection of performance videos, which we will be featuring on the site in the coming months,” said jazz-on-the-Web guru Bret Primack, who produced the site in collaboration with Lovano. “September’s offering, Saxophone Summit, live at Birdland performing ‘India,’ is something you can’t watch anyplace else.”
Here’s a media schedule for the site through November:
September:
Audio: Joe’s tribute to Elvin Jones includes “Eternal Joy,” a track from his Trio Fascination album written especially for Jones and John Coltrane.
Video: In conjunction with the release of Gathering of Spirits, the recorded debut of Saxophone Summit, the group Joe co-leads with Michael Brecker and David Liebman, a live performance of John Coltrane’s “India.” This was recorded in 1999 in a live Webcast the group did from Birdland.
Video interviews: David Liebman discusses how the collective improvisation of Saxophone Summit is an extension of this music. And all three members of the group share their thoughts on playing freely in a communal setting.
October:
Audio: A celebration of drummer Ed Blackwell’s birthday with “Blackwell’s Message,” from Lonano’s album Tenor Legacy.
Video performance: Lovano’s trio with bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Idris Muhammad, recorded live in Brazil.
Video interviews: Lovano talks about Dave Liebman and his collaboration on Saxophone Summit’s new release. Joe also offers his thoughts on the experience of working with two other saxophonists in this unique collaboration.
