Joe Ascione Trio: Post No Bills

In an unusual departure from its customary stylistic focus, Arbors Jazz here takes a sidestep from classic swing to present, on his first leader date, the talented young drummer Joe Ascione fronting what is basically a modern piano trio with guest appearances by tenorman Jerry Weldon and guitarist Ron Affif. Pianist Dave LaLama and bassist Tim Givens are accorded center spots on “My Shining Hour,” “Well, You Needn’t,” “Chelsea Bridge,” “Get Happy,” “All Blues,” as an up-temp samba, and “Nobody Else but Me,” while Weldon, in very much of an early Rollins/Trane mode, is showcased on a relaxed “Bouncin’ With Bud” and the brightly paced “Moments Notice” and “Eternal Triangle.” Affif attracts attention on “Pent-Up House,” “Moments Notice,” and “All MyTomorrows.”
