Jimmy Dawkins Band: Blistering

Another good ‘un is The Jimmy Dawkins Band’s Blistering (Delmark DE-641; 61:17). Recorded in 1975, it was the last session done at Chess Studios in Chicago. Some rough spots with the rhythm section, a few glaring clams here and there and at times meandering, but it does provide some prime examples of Dawkins’ killing, sustaining tone. Interesting covers of Dave Bartholomew’s “Blue Monday,” Kenny Burrell’s “Chitlins Con Carne,” Little Walter’s “Blues With A Feeling” and Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode To Billie Joe,” interspersed by tons of aggressive guitar work from one of the rawest from Chicago’s West Side.
