Jim Adkins: Turning Point

In the warm-toned, upbeat tradition of his Positive Music labelmates lies guitarist Jim Adkins, whose gentle-glide guitar work on Turning Point makes for some sweet easy listening, but not an original journey. The Richmond, Va.-based guitarist plays in sunny tones throughout, from the easygoing Brazilian backbeats of “Just Chillin'” to the light funk of groovers like “Get Over It” and “Straight Ahead.” Adkins stutters and runs the register a bit more on the funky “Into the Storm,” but swings easily on the open-air, ride-type tunes like “Take Me There” and “Turning Point,” which boast the happy fingerprints of producer Ken Navarro. Though Adkins displays solid technique throughout, without a particularly bracing melody or stretch opportunity to shake things up, the album remains nice background music. Another sweet track, “Serenity,” appropriately defines this likeable, if somewhat ephemeral, offering.
