Jeff Linsky: Passport to the Heart

On his fourth Concord album, Linksy’s guitar stylings caress 11 smooth-jazz selections, mostly originals predictably accompanied by seven sidemen. No dispute over Linsky’s clean, classically trained technique, demonstrated earliest on Dave Grusin’s pretty “Love Theme From Havana”. But riskless originals such as “Love Club” can make you long for complex, fresh melodies and underpinnings that don’t smack of 1960s studio dates. Yet, with percussionist Michael Spiro providing occasional excitement, Linsky’s music holds greatest appeal for NAC-radio loyalists.
