Jazz Police: The Music of Daniel Barry

The Music of Daniel Barry (Origin) is the second release by the Seattle-based big band Jazz Police to showcase member Barry’s compositions. This one, devoted exclusively to the trumpeter, features nine of his superbly crafted charts, nearly all of them in some kind of Latin mode-including a genuine tango. That Barry is a well-schooled composer/arranger is reflected in his fresh, imaginative approaches to traditional material. In the medium tempo (non-Latin) “Ancestors,” for example, he sometimes has the other horns providing the background while the bass instruments supply the melodic interest. Adding a special bit of Latin authenticity to the session, pianist Jovino Santo Neto, who has recorded with Flora Purim, Hermeto Pascoal and Sergio Mendes, guests on the samba “Black Bean Boss.” Barry is fortunate to have the Jazz Police to present his music. Good solos and exceptional ensemble work combined with his excellent charts make for a successful package.
