Jason Miles: Cozmopolitan

Meanwhile, Jason Miles’ first album as a leader, Cozmopolitan (Jason Miles Music), has finally been officially released-25 years after it was recorded. As Miles recalls in the liner notes, the original 1979 album was never sold to a label, and he put the tapes away-which he didn’t rediscover until 2003. The lineup includes saxophonists Michael Brecker and Gerry Niewood, a young Marcus Miller on bass and then-newcomer guitarist Ricardo Silveira. The title track is a vibrant tune that reflects the energy of city life, while Brecker and Miles engage in some adept interplay on “The Man Who Pushes the Buttons” and “Poetry,” which opens with a classically-inflected piano solo and transforms into a snappy ensemble number featuring agile solos from Niewood and Silveira.
