James Moody: At the Jazz Workshop

This James Moody CD was cut live in 1961 with a septet containing Moody on alto and soprano sax and flute, trumpet, trombone, baritone sax, piano, bass and drums. Some nice Tadd Dameronish charts are employed, and Moody has almost all of the solo space. He’s astonishing at times, displaying amazing chops, swinging like crazy and playing lines that are extremely rich and complex rhythmically. Lyricist/vocalist Eddie Jefferson appears as singer on three tracks, displaying the vocalese style he pioneered and sounding quite buoyant.
