James Andrews: Satchmo of the Ghetto

It’s New Orleans all the way with trumpeter/vocalist James Andrews, who kicks things off with an R&B tribute to his grandfather, Jessie “Oop-Poo-Pah-Doo” Hill, on a rollicking yet touching “Poop Ain’t Gotta Scuffle No More.” It was written by two others deep in the city’s roots: Dr. John, who is heard on this and six other cuts, and label owner, producer Allen Toussaint, who also contributes some fine piano. Things swing softly on another tribute, the memorable “Sweet Emma.” It lilts along as Andrews brings the warmth of his personality to his horn. Starting in music on the brass band scene, Andrews returns to the streets on the traditional “The Old Rugged Cross.” Andrews’ debut on Satchmo of the Ghetto blends traditional jazz, R&B and that essential Latin tinge which is naturally New Orleans.
