Jazz at Lincoln Center’s (JALC) Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra will release a live album on June 28 on Palmetto Records, entitled Una Noche Inolvidable (An Unforgettable Night). The performance was recorded on Jan. 28, 2005 with Arturo O’Farrill (pictured) during the inaugural season at JALC’s new home at Rose Hall.
O’Farrill featured two vocalists in the January performance, Herman Olivera and Claudia Acuna, both noted artists in the Afro-Latin tradition. Olivera, who is originally from New Jersey, has worked with artists including Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri, while Acuna, originally from Chile, regularly performed in Santiago’s jazz clubs before moving to the United States and releasing albums on Verve and Maxjazz.
O’Farrill spoke highly of the performance, commenting on the theater’s complementary acoustics and the quality performances by all the musicians throughout the night.
Una Noche Inolvidable is the second in a series of releases from JALC through Palmetto, the first being the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra’s performance of A Love Supreme, under the direction of Wynton Marsalis.
In support of the album, the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra will embark on a nation-wide tour in August. Tour dates are as follows:

Jonathan Butler: The Simple Life
Jonathan Butler’s optimistic music belies a dirt-poor childhood growing up in a South Africa segregated by apartheid. Live in South Africa, a new CD and DVD package, presents a sense of the resulting inner turmoil, mixed with dogged resolve, that paved the way to his status as an icon in his country and successful musician outside of it. Looking back, the 46-year-old Butler says today, the driving forces that led to his overcoming apartheid-the formal policy of racial separation and economic discrimination finally dismantled in 1993-were family, faith and abundant talent.
“When we were kids, our parents never talked about the ANC [African National Congress] or Nelson Mandela,” he says. Butler was raised as the youngest child in a large family. They lived in a house patched together by corrugated tin and cardboard, in the “coloreds only” township of Athlone near Cape Town. “They never talked about struggles so we never knew what was happening.”
