In honor of Thelonious Monk’s birthday on Oct. 10, Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City will be celebrating his birthday at the end of October with concerts and events dedicated to the pianist.
The celebrations will commence on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. with a “Jazz Talk: Rhythm-a-ning: Thelonious Monk,” the first of the 2005-2006 season. At the Irene Diamond Education Center, renowned scholar and photographer Robin D. G. Kelley and pianist Eric Reed will explore Monk’s influence on music. Tickets for this event are $10.
“Jazz in Motion: Tappin’ Into Monk” is the second-half of the tribute. During two 8 p.m. performances on Oct. 28 and 29, Savion Glover tap dance to Thelonious Monk’s music. School-age children will also get an opportunity to perform with Glover on Oct. 29 at noon and 2 p.m. in a dance and jazz collaboration called “Jazz For Young People, Jazz in Motion: Tappin’ Into Monk featuring Savion Glover.” All of the Jazz in Motion events will be held at the Frederick P. Rose Hall. Tickets for the evening performances range from $30 to $130 and the daytime performances are $10-30.
