Jacintha: Here’s to Ben

Singapore-based Jacintha is a straightforward, classically trained singer who attains backing from deft instrumentalists for this tribute to Ben Webster produced by Joe Harley. Jacintha’s penchant for performing timeless standards allows for some resplendent solos from tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards and pianist Kei Akagi with support from bassist Darek Oles and drummer Larance Marable. Jacintha has chalked up stage, theater, TV and festival performances and has recorded several pop albums, but this is her first jazz album. She certainly can’t go wrong with her nine heart-tugging versions of 1940s and ’50s ballads such as “Georgia on My Mind,” “Our Love Is Here to Stay,” “Tenderly,” “Stardust” and other popular favorites. Jacintha holds promise as a balladeer with the wholesome, delicate, sweetly emotional style reminiscent of Doris Day.
