Pianist and composer Isaac Cole, brother of Nat “King” Cole, died on April 22 from cancer in Arizona. He was 73.
Known as “Ike,” Cole often said that he may have benefited from being the brother of a famous singer (who died in 1965 of lung cancer at age 45), but disliked the assertion that he was trying to live off the name.
Ike played bass drum in an Army band, but his attention was always focused on the piano. In 1957 he formed the Ike Cole Trio. The band was booked steadily in Las Vegas and also toured the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Japan.
In 1990, Ike toured with his brother Freddy, a singer and pianist, saluting their brother Nat. In 1992, Ike played keyboard for his niece, Natalie Cole, on the album Unforgettable, which won a Grammy Award.Originally Published
