Irvin Mayfield Golf Jam

Neither golf nor jazz would seem likely to thrive in the forbidding deserts one normally associates with Arizona. But the San Marcos Golf Resort & Conference Center has sprung up to provide duffers with their own oasis, and will host the Irvin Mayfield Golf Jam to benefit the non-profit organization Jazz in AZ on Sat., Sept. 15.

Though Mayfield (pictured left) is from New Orleans, he has done much to help the cause of jazz in Arizona, including free clinics involving over 600 students at local schools. Jazz in AZ, meanwhile, provides a forum for local jazz musicians to interact, gives scholarships to deserving students and schedules live jazz events, among other services.

The day will begin with a “four-person scramble” golf tournament and feature cocktails with Mayfield and dinner before the evening’s performance by the Tony Vacca Quartet, featuring Mayfield and Richard Johnson as special guests.
