Indigenius: Things We Do

Indigenous stakes out similar territory on its debut,Things We Do (Pachyderm 0001; 51:25) though with a far looser connection to the blues. Guitarist/vocalist Mato Nanji seems equally inspired by Hendrix and SRV, but as a vocalist and songwriter he seems to be coming more out of Hootie & the Blowfish. Some outstanding six-string work here, particularly on “Got to Tell You” (Nanji’s answer to Jimi’s “Voodoo Chile”), “Begin to Wonder” (his answer to Jimi’s “Freedom”) and the searing instrumental “Holdin’ Out” (see Jimi’s “Foxy Lady” or Stevie Ray’s rendition of Jimi’s “Voodoo Chile”). And he shows an affinity for hearty shuffles on “Blues This Morning” and “What’s Goin’ On,” his direct homage to SRV, but hardcore blues fans will probably want to pass on the poppier aspects of this group’s debut. Still, this guy Mato can really play the hell out of his ax. Of course, we’ve heard it all before. But it’s still impressive if you dig blues rock guitar.
