ICP Tours U.S., Canada

Holland’s Instant Composers Pool may be a big band that covers tunes by Ellington and Monk, but make no mistake-the ICP is not a Lincoln Center-style outfit. The group does it avant-garde, but without the headiness and pretension. The ICP sound is joyous, it’s both literate and whimsical. Catchy melodies often come out of nowhere, then disappear. Wrong notes are relished, encouraged even. It’s like Sun Ra without the costumes and the conga line.

The 10-piece ensemble, which features ICP founder and drummer Han Bennink, will begin a 14-date North American tour next week. It’s their first trip across the Atlantic since touring in 2001 in support of their most recent album, Oh, My Dog!.

In addition to Bennink, the group includes pianist Misha Mengelberg, reedists Michael Moore, Ab Baars and new ICPer Tobias Delius, trumpeter Thomas Heberer, trombonist Wolter Wierbos, cellist Tristan Honsinger, contrabassist Ernst Glerum and violist Mary Oliver.
