How to Catch Henry Grimes in Concert

With apologies to those not close to New York City or Italy, below is a list of recently announced show dates for avant-garde jazz bassist Henry Grimes, who, after disappearing more than 30 years ago—and having been rumored to be dead—resurfaced at the beginning of this year. Thanks go out Athens, Ga. social worker and writer Marshall Marrotte, who found the former Albert Ayler bassist living in a South Central Los Angeles hotel and broke the story in interviews published in The Wire and Signal to Noise. (More on that can be read by clicking here.)

Grimes had not played bass in years and had sold his instrument not long after moving from New York to California. Upon hearing this news, bassist William Parker, with help from the Musicians Emergency Fund, sent Grimes a bass. Grimes has since built his chops back up over the months and has played in various groups in L.A. and at least one gig in New York as a special guest with one of Parker’s bands.
