Honeyboy Edwards: Mississippi Delta Bluesman

A young, spry Honeyboy Edwards is heard on Mississippi Delta Bluesman (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings 40132; 45:01). Originally recorded in 1979 for Moses Asch’s Folkways label, it showcases the Delta bluesman in vibrant form on Robert Johnson staples “Sweet Home Chicago” and “Dust My Broom,” Tommy Johnson’s “Big Fat Mama,” Memphis Minnie’s “Bumble Bee” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Ride With Me Tonight.” Edwards’ patented string snapping guitar attack is also heard to good effect on Charley Patton’s “Pony Blues” and Magic Sam’s “Things Gonna Be Alright.” This sumptuous package, a real treat for Delta blues fans, includes an informative 26-page booklet with photos, lyrics and expert analysis of Edwards’ contribution to the blues.
