When the Blue Note label returned after a five-year dormancy in 1985, label heads Bruce Lundvall and Michael Cuscuna produced a concert at New York City’s Town Hall for the occasion. The show starred a bunch of players who recorded for the label in its glory years, including drummer Art Blakey, keyboardist Herbie Hancock (pictured), vibist Bobby Hutcherson and guitarist Kenny Burrell. Portions of the show have been available on video for some time, but a new DVD due out November 4 will feature four performances previously unreleased on video as well as a Surround Sound mix.
The DVD, titled One Night With Blue Note: An Historic All Star Reunion Concert, features 14 performances from the concert, most of them by all-star ensembles like the quintet of Hancock, Hutcherson, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Tony Williams and flutist James Newton. There are three solo performances, one each by guitarist Stanley Jordan and pianists Cecil Taylor and McCoy Tyner.
