HIM: Our Point of Departure

Him explore interesting territory on their fourth release, Our Point of Departure, though they don’t shy away from the aforementioned electronic textures. Assembled in much the same way Teo Macero put together the epochal electric Miles releases (multi-instrumentalist Doug Scharin combed through hours of tape and embellished and extended where he saw fit), the disc’s six tracks are augmented by intermittent stabs of dubby echo and/or grinding tape noise. But these effects don’t overshadow the pulsating interactive heart of these compositions. Sax player Carlo Cennamo rides out over the top of “Liberation Pt. 2,” leading into a hypnotic percussion and sound-effects break, while Sean Meadows adds some Pete Coseyish guitar squeals to the rumba-influenced “Liberation Pt. 2.”

Part of Him’s effectiveness comes from having a group in which all but two of the members double on percussion. The rhythmic tapestries, which draw from cross-cultural hot spots like Haiti and Cuba, are the centerpiece here.
