On Tuesday, June 6 at 6 p.m., a benefit jam session will be held for Hilton Ruiz at LQ’s in New York City.
Ruiz, currently in a coma at a New Orleans hospital, is suffering from severe trauma to the face and a fractured skull. Money is being raised to cover the expense of transporting Ruiz to a New York hospital. The suggested donation for entry is $20.
The benefit includes several notable performers such as Zon del Barrio with saxophonist Ivan Renta and vocalist Frankie Vasquez, Chembo Corniel and Choworo and Willie Martinez and La Familia Sextet. Also performing are percussionist Luisito Quintero and flutist Andrea Brachfeld.
On Friday, May 26, Ruiz’s daughter Aida reported, “My dad opened his eyes for the first time today.”
Although Ruiz’s doctor believes it will require a miracle for the pianist for perform again, event promoter Eddie Rodriguez feels that the “prayers for Hilton’s recovery are working.”
