Harold Danko Trio: Trilix

Here’s to the hard-working jazz players who keep plugging away in relative obscurity, decade after decade, as their art grows ever deeper in expressiveness. And here’s to Harold Danko, whose Trilix (Steeplechase) serves to remind us, once again, how criminally overlooked this superb pianist is. With exceptionally intuitive support from bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Jeff Hirshfield, Danko takes on compositions originally fashioned by jazz musicians. His imaginative program includes such infrequently addressed tunes as Freddie Redd’s “Sister Salvation,” Tony Williams’ “Pee Wee” and Richie Beirach’s “Elm.” Danko’s a mature player who knows the power of economy, melodic sense and a refined touch; wasting not a note, his improvisations always tell a compelling story.
