In celebration of the 75th birthday anniversaries of John Coltrane and Miles Davis, Michael Brecker (pictured left), Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargrove will take to the road to perform the music of Coltrane and Davis, as well as original compositions inspired by the two giants.
The 28-city U.S. tour, entitled “Directions in Music,” will begin Sept. 19 in Santa Cruz, Calif. and finish in Naples, Fla. Oct. 29. Brecker, Hancock and Hargrove will be backed by bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, running the gamut of acoustic, electric, bebop, ballad, modal and other styles touched on by Coltrane and Davis throughout their careers.
All five musicians on the tour share a similar musical debt to Coltrane and Davis, but of the five, only Hancock has shared stages, album credits and personal relationships with the master musicians.
