Guitar Gabriel Robert Lewis Jones: Deep in the South

The Music Maker Relief Foundation, a not-for-profit organization co-founded by Mark Levinson and Tim Duffy to support worthy Southern blues artists, has recently sponsored a touring package of roots blues originals. In conjunction with this bit of grassroots exposure of these relative unknowns, a series of three cds has been made available under the auspices of Cello/Sire/WEA Records. Blues troubadour Guitar Gabriel (a.k.a. Robert Lewis Jones) demonstrates an easy going six-string style and a touch of the poet on Deep in the South (Cello 91001-2; 53:25). A product of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he came under the spell of Blind Boy Fuller and Rev. Gary Davis at an early age. Gabriel continued playing his eclectic mix of Piedmont, Chicago, Texas and gospel blues up until his death in 1996. He is accompanied here on second guitar by producer Timothy Duffy.
