Griot: Incantation

Gernot Blume’s meditative piano and Julie Spencer’s ethereal vocals on the opener, “Exodus,” might register as new-agey esoterica. But as the 12-minute piece develops, with Blume switching to drums and after alto saxophonist Peter Epstein enters the picture, things become more interesting. Musical dialogues ensue. From the tense unisons and free improv of “The Answer” to the serene harp feature “Pilgrimage,” the frantic “First Movement” and the buoyant 5/4 “Aardvarks,” this flexible unit weaves its spell on this aptly titled outing.
