Glenn Jones: Feels Good

Veteran R&B singer-songwriter Glenn Jones knows his strengths and sticks to them on Feels Good (Peak), his first release since 1998’s It’s Time. The album is comprised mostly of love ballads that highlight Jones’ mile-wide romantic streak and supple, gospel-honed voice.

Jones turns in dramatic and anguished vocal performances on “I Wonder Why,” and “Every Time,” two songs that address love gone wrong, and he chastises an errant lover who’s had a change of heart on the emotional “You Should’ve Stayed Here.” Most of the songs focus on the positive aspects of love, however, such as “Has Anybody?” wherein Jones pledges to shower his lover with devotion, and the lovely wedding song “From Now On,” a duet with Jones’ labelmate Regina Belle. Elsewhere, Paul Jackson Jr.’s acoustic-guitar accents help give “When Love Breaks U Down” a subtle Latin flavor.

Feels Good isn’t an especially jazzy album-most of the songs would be better classified as adult urban-but these songs would fit in well with the kinds of ballads favored by smooth-jazz radio.
